Success Through Analytics

Eliminating clinical variation is not only critical in ensuring patients receive the safest, highest-quality care. It is also an integral component of reducing the overall cost of healthcare.

John Michael Eargle, Vice President of Orthopedic Services for Ascension Tennessee, has been using analytic reports created in Tableau by The Resource Group to engage in discussions with other orthopedic physicians about the cost per case and total item usage. The Tableau reports along with Executive Information System dashboards and Ascension Clinical Research Institute (ACRI) analytics, are examples of how leveraging data can support reduction of unnecessary variability in care.

Matt Muhsinov, Area Senior Solution Specialist for The Resource Group, describes the reports as interactive and detailed.

"The Tableau reports allow users to see a cost-per-case comparison by physician," he said. "Users can also see other metrics such as total number of cases performed and the supply and drug cost/usage for each case. The report allows viewers the ability to log in, see the data, and then drill down and see additional detail using custom filters."

Service line leaders are responsible for reducing care variation within their specialty area. These reports provide data that can be used to drive improvement as they create additional value, which allows leaders to create opportunities that align with national priorities.

"I have quick access to this information, and it gives me an accurate estimate of cost-per-case and item usage information for each physician to continue these important discussions, allowing our teams to achieve additional savings and increase standardizations," John Michael said.
